In a Druid Hills home designed by GordonDunning, a playful mix of colors and styles live happily in the historic home’s family room. The house was designed by famed Atlanta architect Neil Reid, and boasts traditional bones while hosting a family that wasn’t afraid to have fun with the design inside. This room is a great example of the home’s welcoming livability – and you know I’m always a sucker for a jewel-toned velvet sofa. When I got the chance to makeover a college bedroom, I knew my best friend Emma’s room would be the perfect project. I visit her apartment at Auburn University often and she has a great sense of style, so we worked together easily to sort through the Back to Campus product guide to find the perfect pieces to make the most of Emma’s bedroom. When working with small spaces, it can be hard to find space to live, work, and play – but form and function come hand-in-hand for a lot of the pieces in this design. I found apartment-friendly furniture with storage and all the cutest accessories to style out the space on the Home Depot website. See the room before and check out the rest of the design below! “MAXIMIZING STYLE IN A SMALL COLLEGE BEDROOM”
Thou Swell is a lifestyle and interior design blog named for an old jazz tune, sharing home, garden, and entertaining projects and inspiration. Stop by to find an avant-garde mix of contemporary and traditional design curated with an eye for classic Southern style.
If there’s one Atlanta designer who’s mastered elegant minimalism, it’s Kay Douglass. Her own home is a testament to less is more, especially with the incredible way in which she uses bold, saturated color to bring life to her rooms. With her own showroom in Charleston, it made sense to set down roots in the city and an 1840’s row house fit the ticket perfectly. Inspired by the chic apartments of Paris, she modernized the home with light and color for a really stunning contrast of new and old. It’s a wonderful lesson in restraint – without lacking any playfulness.

The bathrooms in Dove Hill Project are the last spaces of the house left to renovate, and I’m excited to be partnering with The Home Depot for the tile selection in the master bath, which will be featured in the new walk-in shower that’s replacing the old bathtub. Nothing in the bathroom has been updated since the townhouse was built in 1982 (as you can see in the before pictures below), so all of the fixtures are much lower to the ground and feel super dated. I’m bringing in the vinyl plank flooring I chose for the house plus new tiling, double-vanity, and fixtures that are going to make this room feel completely new. I went for a classic, but contemporary look that will age gracefully – and won’t break the budget.
Searching for the perfect tile was easy on Home Depot’s website, which has a great selection at a variety of prices and styles. I knew I wanted subway tiles on the wall and a mosaic on the floor, so I was able to filter my choices and find the perfect pairing. See what I ended up with in my design board below!
The annual Serena & Lily Memorial Day sale is here! It’s the perfect time to bring their classic coastal style inside or out with 20% off across their entire website. As always, I’m loving all of the timeless summery materials they use across their collections, like wicker, linen, and bleached wood. The proportions are always spot-on in their furniture introductions, and I’m obsessed with the subtle patterns in their textiles collections from throw pillows to bedding. I’m so excited to be adding these throw pillows to the Dove Hill Project living room!
To celebrate the sale Serena & Lily sent me a set of their Mallorca beach towels – the must-have accessory of the summer. You can see how I styled it on our deck on Instagram here!
